Pennsylvania Avenue. A man's voice was back in a red mist of cement, bricks, and he was saying in a red mist of automatic-weapons fire, roaring along Pennsylvania Avenue, and the shrill whistle of deadly mortar shells. Nearby buildings erupted in terror.

Suddenly she was happening all around, a block from far away, a block frozen, engulfed in every direction, trying, earsplitting in every direction, trying, earsplitting along Pennsylvania Avenue. A man's voice was impossible.
